Our client was a US-based drone manufacturer and seller. Their user base comprises owners of large land parcels requiring extensive surveillance of their vast property.Â
Our client offers technological solutions for drones to their users. However, they were facing problems training their non-tech-savvy audience on drone operations and control. We suggested VR Simulation as an effective and safe training program for their customers.
High-end drones are becoming a great technological solution to survey and supervise huge land parcels. However, operating such large drones requires a considerable amount of training, given that a simple mistake can cause damage to a machine worth thousands of dollars. That is why a simple yet effective training program for a non-tech-savvy audience that our clients could offer to their customers was the need of the hour.
Our team overcame the challenge successfully and developed a realistic, scalable, and simple-to-operate VR drone simulation. We incorporated life-like drone maneuvering and controls, collision detection, and, more importantly, dynamic environment incorporation functionality, into the project.
This allowed the client to change the 3D environment based on real-world locations as per their needs. Users could train in an area that looked like their land parcels and excel at drone flying in that particular location.
The project required an identical simulation of the drone flying experience. For this, our team carefully studied the drones of our client, their maneuverability, speed, angle, tilt, etc. We evaluated the underlying physics for realistic flying and crashing experiences. The drones could only fly when the conditions and controls met those of the real world.
We added real-time OBJ importing for dynamic environment incorporation into the VR simulation. This helped our clients include 3D models of real-world locations (aka 3D environments) in the VR simulation as needed. Moreover, the simulation will read the 3D models and integrate collision detection in sync with the 3D assets in that environment.
Since the project involved a highly dynamic component, we needed to run intensive testing to make sure that the simulation was running smoothly on a variety of platforms. We evolved accordingly and developed a complete VR training solution along with post-sale support for our client.
The client was fully satisfied and highly appreciated the drone simulation. The program added value to their products as their users can now better understand the crucial role of drones in the surveillance of large land parcels. Users also went through the immersive training program and liked the teaching methodology.
They learned faster and retained more. The VR product visualization made customers more confident about it. This increased sales and helped our client garner a better market presence.
The client was able to provide effective drone training 3 times faster than their traditional modes.
The users were 4 times more focused when trained via Virtual Reality.
What took two hours to learn earlier could be learned now in only 30 minutes using VR.
